What is better than fording streams,
plodding through the spring mud, witnessing wonderful
feats of athleticism, and enjoying a day outdoors at
one of the most amazing parks in the Westchester
County Parks System?! This Sunday, April 25th, Ward
Pound Ridge Reservation will be transformed into a
slippery, muddy, challenge course for hundreds
of "Leathermen" (and women) who choose to run this
annual 10K race.
The Leatherman Loop is an annual competition of
wills which includes crossing streams, picking through
rocks and tree roots, avoiding deer (who strangely
enough ran into an eleven year old boy a few years
back) and running with a pack of hundreds of
other runners on small trails.
Maybe this sounds like mayhem, or maybe the
challenge appeals to you in some way (there should be
some reason you have been going to the gym all of
these months), but I have to say that either way it
seems like a great
excuse to visit Pound Ridge Reservation and check out
the action. The race benefits local charities, you can
register up to an hour before the race start time, and it
only costs $15 to sign up and run (plus an $8 entry fee
for the park).
Now, if you are not convinced to actually exert
yourself in the race, consider a trip to the
Reservation itself. Ward Pound Ridge Reservation
includes
4,700 beautiful wooded acres in Cross River, NY. It
hosts more than 35 miles of hiking trails and nature
trails, camping facilities, and picnic tables. It is a great
way to get out and enjoy these beautiful spring days
and an even more exciting and easy way to test out
whether your family enjoys camping. You are close
enough to home to return in the middle of the night,
yet can enjoy enough "nature" to let your kids feel
like they've really had an adventure.
Ward Pound Ridge also maintains the Trailside
Nature Museum which displays taxidermic mounts of
local wildlife, historical relics, and Native American
artifacts. They run interesting children's lectures,
programs, and family adventures-- call the main office
for a calendar of events at 914.864.7317 or click on

Mom's
event pages!).
